ASTING NOTE: "2023 was another classic vintage, and perfect for Chardonnay. Flowering conditions were excellent, and thereafter conditions remained warm and dry throughout the growing season. The colour of this young Chardonnay is a highlight here - between pale gold and straw, it’s bright, intense, and inviting.
The nose is floral, with lifted honeysuckle dancing over white peach and nectarine. “Struck match” oak ferment and toasty brioche notes linger in the background. The palate is fresh- a fruit bowl of orchard and tropical fruits. Medium weight with creamy texture, the finish has an oyster shell salinity." Woodlands
ABOUT THE WINE: 100% Wilyabrup Valley fruit, 100% Mendoza (Wente) clone, 100% barrel fermentation, and 100% spontaneous fermentation. Fermented with no additions, matured in barrel for 9 months. - ABOUT THE PRODUCER: Established in 1973 by David and Heather Watson, Woodlands was one of the first 5 vineyards planted in the Margaret River region. The first cuttings were taken from the adjacent Moss Wood vineyard. The original dry grown 8 acres, planted between 1973 and 1976, has expanded over time to 26 acres of organic vineyards on prime classic rolling Wilyabrup landscape. The classic sandy loams over ancient gravelly red/brown loam over clay are especially suited to Cabernet Sauvignon and Margaret River’s remarkable “Gin Gin” clone Chardonnay. Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Pinot Noir are also grown. For much of the 1990’s the fruit was sold to nearby wineries, however in 1999 production under the Woodlands name began once in again. Since 2002 David Watson’s son Stuart has been the full time winemaker. His highly intuitive and laissez faire approach to winemaking, together with a superb vineyard site, has resulted in a flurry of interest from the media and fine wine collectors particularly for the Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. In 2007 the Watson family purchases the Woodlands Brook vineyard to further grow their vineyard holdings.
