- TASTING NOTE: "The Estate is a barrel selection with fruit off the Leongatha vineyard, whole-bunch pressed to French oak, 30% new, some going through mlf and aged 14 months. Such incredible depth and drive as it shows off its flinty sulphides, smoky oak and leesy flavours with aplomb. There’s also stone fruit and Meyer lemon, ginger spice and more. The acidity keeps this buoyant and lively. Great definition across the palate, savoury and moreish. An excellent Estate Chardonnay." 96 Points - Jane Faulkner, Halliday

ABOUT THE WINE: Grapes were whole bunch pressed directly to barrel for a natural fermentation in a temperature controlled environment. A 30 ppm SO2 addition to each barrel. We chose extra tight grain oak barrels with a light toast, 46% were new barrels for the Premium Chardonnay blend. Towards the end of fermentation, barrels were topped up and over the course of time given an occasional stir with topping up every week. All barrels underwent malo-lactic before adding a small amount of SO2. Wine stayed in barrel for 14 months. The Premium is a selection of our finest barrels from the Leongatha vineyard and all barrels from Leongatha South. The barrels are gently gravity decanted off the settled lees via a tap inserted near the bottom of the headboard of the barrel to tank. No fining of any sort, but coarsely filtered to bottle in July 2022.
Bass Phillip - ABOUT THE PRODUCER: The story of Bass Phillip starts back in the early 1970's when the first vineyard site, located 15 kilometres south of Leongatha, was selected to plant vines based on climatic and topographical observations which when combined with South Gippsland's moderating influences of the mountains to the north and ocean to the south, produces the perfect conditions for long, slow ripening of grapes. Our other 7.5-hectare vineyard was then planted in 1998 primarily with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay but also some small plantings of Gewurztraminer and Nebbiolo, all on a north facing slope, in Leongatha's hinterland, increasing our overall area of vines to just over 10 hectares. Our wines reflect our vines and their terroir, which is enhanced by our close planted, low cropping, old vines with only the use of natural processes and sprays, no irrigation and meticulous canopy management, culminating to produce wines of depth, length and complexity. - Phillip Jones handcrafted tiny quantities of superlative pinot noir which, at its best, had no equal in Australia. Painstaking site selection, ultra-close vine spacing and the very cool climate of South Gippsland are the keys to the magic of Bass Phillip and its eerily burgundian pinots. One of Australia’s greatest small producers, it's been heading down a new path since Jones sold the assets (winery, stock and 14ha of vineyards) in May '20 to a syndicate led by Burgundian winemaker Jean-Marie Fourrier (who has known Jones for 14 years) and 2 Singaporeans who already have lucrative wine businesses.
