- TASTING NOTE: "Hand picked, 20% whole-bunch pressed, the balance crushed and destemmed. Matured in French puncheons and barriques (30% new) for 11 months. A light, bright gold with green tinges. Seductive with its bouquet of melon, fresh fig, yellow peach, chamomile and a little lemongrass. A savoury nuance, too. On the palate, which is powerful, densely packed and structured, you'll find some grapefruit pith and hazelnut. Finishes extremely long, saline and gently grippy." 96 Points - Philip Rich, Halliday
- ABOUT THE WINE: Grapes are hand picked. A relatively firm pressing enhances the wine's texture. Alcoholic fermentation occurs in barrel. Malolactic fermentation is not allowed: this winemaking choice highlights the local climate, which frequently yields grapes with optimal acidity. 30% of the wine is matured in new French oak barriques, while the remainder is aged in older oak and large casks (1500 L). Lees stirring is conducted to enhance complexity and body.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER: "Mount Mary was one of the foremost pioneers of the Yarra Valley after 50 years without viticultural activity. From the outset they produced wines of rare finesse and purity. The late founder, Dr John Middleton, practised near-obsessive attention to detail long before that phrase slid into oenological vernacular. He relentlessly strove for perfection and all 4 of the wines in the original Mount Mary portfolio achieved just that (within the context of each vintage). Charming grandson Sam Middleton is equally dedicated, assuming the winemaker mantle in ’11. In ’08, Mount Mary commenced a detailed program of vine improvement, in particular assessing the implications of progressively moving towards a 100% grafted vineyard to provide immunity from phylloxera and a move to sustainable organic viticulture."
