TASTING NOTE: "From a Lenswood site at 500m elevation, produced from three chardonnay grape clones. A beautiful, poised and energetic white wine that marries minerality, fine-boned fruit character, the sweet spice of oak seasoning, freshness and textural nuance with aplomb. An ultra-appealing perfume of stone fruits, cinnamon, sea spray, nougat, ginger biscuits and halva meets a flavour profile of similar descriptors lifted on a gentle wash of green apple and fino sherry saline/savoury notes that follow through with more flinty minerality. It sits even, succulent and deeply flavoured, yet fresh through its ultra-persistent course across the palate. Seductive, superb wine." - 96 Points - Mike Bennie, Halliday Wine Companion
- ABOUT THE WINE: Another cooler than average season with some influence from La Niña weather patterns. The season was cool to begin with, which meant that a smaller crop formed during fruit set. The summer was mild, warming up towards the end and adding flavour and ripeness to the fresh acidity. Gently whole bunch pressed, then fermented in 500 litre puncheon, 30% new. Full malo, and 10 months in oak before resting in tank prior to bottling.
- ABOUT THE PRODUCER: Shaw + Smith was established in 1989 by cousins Michael Hill Smith MW and Martin Shaw. They make wines exclusively from the Adelaide Hills, from varieties that suit the cooler climate: Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz. Shaw + Smith own two vineyards, in Lenswood and Balhannah. Growing the best possible grapes, managing vineyards sustainably, and valuing vine health, soil health, and low yields are central to the Shaw + Smith approach. In the pursuit of quality, all grapes continue to be hand-picked, and the wines are fermented, aged and bottled on site at Balhannah. The wines are vibrant, medium bodied expressions of their varieties that reflect their sites and region. Shaw + Smith’s first vintage was in 1990, and the early vintages were made at Wirra Wirra and Petaluma. In 1999 they purchased a property at Balhannah, where they planted vines, and built the winery and tasting room in time for the 2000 vintage.
