Rich and very concentrated, the palate creamy at the front and silky at the back, making this very easy to drink now. The finish is at once stony and filigree. - ABOUT THE WINE: The Maximim Herrenberg vineyard is planted with ungrafted vines dating back to 1896. The Loewen's make a few wines from this ancient vineyard but the '1896' is produced in a style that emulates how wine would have been made when the vines were first planted. The grapes are crushed immediately after picking and are pressed in the evening after harvest in an old, hand cranked basket press directly to Fuder barrels where it undergoes a slow, natural fermentation.
- ABOUT THE PRODUCER: The Carl Loewen estate can trace it's beginnings back to 1803, but it was in the 1980's and 90's that Karl Josef Loewen began to seek out and purchase plots in some of the great vineyards of the Mosel. Today the estate covers 15 hectares, all managed by organically. Their focus is Riesling with only a small amount of Pinot Blanc also being produced. Wine making inputs are very minimal, with the Loewen's favouring very long, slow natural fermentations. The jewel in the Loewen crown is the Maximim Herrenberg vineyard, planted with ungrafted vines dating back to 1896.

A: Yes if they have your receipt. However all alcohol orders must be picked up by an individual 18 year or older. Proof of age and sobriety are required as per RSA regulation.
