TASTING NOTE: "A mellow and understated chardonnay but with plenty of detail in spice, gentle savouriness and winemaking seasoning, cool acidity, a tightly wound fruit profile, general minerality and high drinkability. Overall, elegant and refined, sleek across the palate and quite compact with a light juiciness in tow. Nougat, lime curd, green apple and ginger in the bouquet, a similar set of descriptors to taste, with a lively trail of spice following on. High in the pleasure stakes, this continues to be an impressive Hills chardonnay." - 94 Points, Mike Bennie, Halliday Wine Companion
- ABOUT THE WINE: The third La Niña influenced season in a row, 2023 was a late, cool, and wet season. The result was the latest harvest experienced, with excellent acidity and lovely cool season flavours. Sourced from from Piccadilly, Lobethal and and Lenswood Vineyards, at 455–500 metres elevation. While high rainfall coupled with slow ripening posed some challenges, careful viticulture allowed varieties like Chardonnay to shine, and the payoff was some terrific fruit when it was finally ready to pick. Hand-picked grapes are whole bunch pressed, then gently squeezed to the finest French oak barrels for fermentation. Here they spend nine months undergoing primary and secondary (malolactic) fermentation. Batches are then blended in stainless steel vats before bottling.
- ABOUT THE PRODUCER: Shaw + Smith was established in 1989 by cousins Michael Hill Smith MW and Martin Shaw. They make wines exclusively from the Adelaide Hills, from varieties that suit the cooler climate: Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz. Shaw + Smith own two vineyards, in Lenswood and Balhannah. Growing the best possible grapes, managing vineyards sustainably, and valuing vine health, soil health, and low yields are central to the Shaw + Smith approach. In the pursuit of quality, all grapes continue to be hand-picked, and the wines are fermented, aged and bottled on site at Balhannah. The wines are vibrant, medium bodied expressions of their varieties that reflect their sites and region. Shaw + Smith’s first vintage was in 1990, and the early vintages were made at Wirra Wirra and Petaluma. In 1999 they purchased a property at Balhannah, where they planted vines, and built the winery and tasting room in time for the 2000 vintage.
