  • TASTING NOTE: "If you are labelled 'Reserve', there’s a reputation to live up to and, as it turns out, this is the nirvana of the suite of BP pinot noirs. As complex, as detailed and as precise as you can get. Heady forest floor aromas, the fragrance of this vineyard, dark fruit, black tea, Middle Eastern spices and star anise with a dusting of cocoa. It keeps giving. The full-bodied palate is superbly textured and coated in ripe, velvety tannins, cedary oak and refreshing acidity. Of course, this is just starting out on its journey, lucky those who can watch this mature. I tip my hat to legendary winemaker John Durham, who came in a few years ago to help Philip Jones finish his last vintage. But the global pandemic and subsequent lockdowns and lockouts meant he has been much more than a caretaker since. John has cared for and nurtured these vines and wines as if they were his own. • ABOUT THE WINE: Bunches are carefully sorted upon arrival at the winery on a sorting table then conveyed to a ‘state of the art’ incline destemmer. The whole berries are gently conveyed directly to open fermenters with an addition of 40 ppm SO2. A natural ferment starts usually within 4 days but hand plunging commences from the start until draining/pressing. Usually between 10-14 days
from harvest, the wine is drained, the skins pressed gently and combined with the free run wine which is settled for a week or so before racking to barrel using
gravity. Malo lactic occurs naturally in barrel and once complete the wine gets 60 ppm SO2. Our Reserve Pinot is a selection of only several barrels of what we believe best reflects the terroir for this vintage from our best block at Leongatha South of which 60% were new barrels. All barrels are light toasted and extra tight
grain oak. Barrels are topped and checked regularly. Wine stays in barrel for 14 months, when it is gravity decanted off lees via a spigot inserted at the bottom of
the barrel to blending light toast tank. No fining of any sort, or filtration before bottling in July 2022. Bass Phillip
  • ABOUT THE PRODUCER: The story of Bass Phillip starts back in the early 1970's when the first vineyard site, located 15 kilometres south of Leongatha, was selected to plant vines based on climatic and topographical observations which when combined with South Gippsland's moderating influences of the mountains to the north and ocean to the south, produces the perfect conditions for long, slow ripening of grapes. Our other 7.5-hectare vineyard was then planted in 1998 primarily with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay but also some small plantings of Gewurztraminer and Nebbiolo, all on a north facing slope, in Leongatha's hinterland, increasing our overall area of vines to just over 10 hectares. Our wines reflect our vines and their terroir, which is enhanced by our close planted, low cropping, old vines with only the use of natural processes and sprays, no irrigation and meticulous canopy management, culminating to produce wines of depth, length and complexity. • Phillip Jones handcrafted tiny quantities of superlative pinot noir which, at its best, had no equal in Australia. Painstaking site selection, ultra-close vine spacing and the very cool climate of South Gippsland are the keys to the magic of Bass Phillip and its eerily burgundian pinots. One of Australia’s greatest small producers, it's been heading down a new path since Jones sold the assets (winery, stock and 14ha of vineyards) in May '20 to a syndicate led by Burgundian winemaker Jean-Marie Fourrier (who has known Jones for 14 years) and 2 Singaporeans who already have lucrative wine businesses. Halliday
