ABOUT THE WINE: The steepest section of Maximin Herrenberg is the origin of this Grosses Gewächs. In this plot the slate is harder and more barren. Extreme conditions for people and vines. The iron content in the soil here is so high that the slate is colored red due to the oxidation of the iron. In 1902 this part of the Maximin Herrenberg was replanted. These ancient, unrooted vines have been preserved to this day. These vines in combination with the unique location produce a very complex wine. The Maximin Herrenberg GG presents itself with a captivating ripe fruit. The yield is only low, but the enjoyment of the wine offers a magnificent spectrum of seductive aromas paired with playful elegance.
Once harvested, grapes are quickly pressed and left to slightly oxidise before being sent Fuders (very large German oak barrels, 1000L) for a very slow, natural ferment. This wine is classified 'Gross Gewachs' (GG) - the highest vineyard classification given to dry German Rieslings, equivalent to the 'Grand Cru' wines of France. - ABOUT THE PRODUCER: The Carl Loewen estate can trace it's beginnings back to 1803, but it was in the 1980's and 90's that Karl Josef Loewen began to seek out and purchase plots in some of the great vineyards of the Mosel. Today the estate covers 15 hectares, all managed by organically. Their focus is Riesling with only a small amount of Pinot Blanc also being produced. Wine making inputs are very minimal, with the Loewen's favouring very long, slow natural fermentations. The jewel in the Loewen crown is the Maximim Herrenberg vineyard, planted with ungrafted vines dating back to 1896.
