- TASTING NOTE: "A blend of 45/30/17/6/2% cabernet sauvignon/merlot/cabernet franc/malbec/petit verdot. Fermented with whole berries and at different temperatures, depending on the variety. All varieties are matured in both barriques and 1600L foudres for 12 months then racked into barriques (35% new) for another 10 months before blending and bottling. A saturated purple-red. This is a special Quintet (and I don't say this lightly) from the first. Aromas of blackberries, blackcurrants, dark cherry skins and crushed violets. A whisper of pencil-shaving oak. An elegant, concentrated, pure and structured wine that will become even more special with time. As I was tasting it, Radiohead's opening track from Kid A came to mind. - ABOUT THE WINE: The 2021 Quintet, (a Bordeaux-style blend), is made up of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Franc, 6% Malbec, and 2% Petit Verdot. The five varieties ferment on the skins for about 12-14 days. The wine is then matured in oak for approximately 22 months: 25% of the blend matures in large format oak (1500 L), and 30% in new barriques (225 L). The rest of the wine is aged in 2-5 year old barriques. The wine undergoes minimal fining and filtration prior to bottling.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER: "Mount Mary was one of the foremost pioneers of the Yarra Valley after 50 years without viticultural activity. From the outset they produced wines of rare finesse and purity. The late founder, Dr John Middleton, practised near-obsessive attention to detail long before that phrase slid into oenological vernacular. He relentlessly strove for perfection and all 4 of the wines in the original Mount Mary portfolio achieved just that (within the context of each vintage). Charming grandson Sam Middleton is equally dedicated, assuming the winemaker mantle in ’11. In ’08, Mount Mary commenced a detailed program of vine improvement, in particular assessing the implications of progressively moving towards a 100% grafted vineyard to provide immunity from phylloxera and a move to sustainable organic viticulture."
