- TASTING NOTE: "The 2022 Riesling Birkweiler Kastanienbusch Grosses Gewächs is from the Permian conglomerations. This is scented and the only GG that shows more of itself. There is almost a sense of passion fruit with its fruity yet tart aromatic allure. Riper notions seem to shine through. The palate is tight, nuanced and more open than its siblings with that wonderfully aromatic zestiness, yet again with fine, easy flow enabled by texture. - ABOUT THE WINE: The Kastanienbusch (or chestnut bush) vineyard is one of the steepest and highest slopes in the Pfalz at 300 meters, on red slate soil that is unusual in the region. This iron-rich, well-draining soil produce wines of great concentration.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER: The Rebholz family has been involved in winemaking since the 16th century, and has owned the estate in Siebeldingen for over a century. In 2002, Gault Millau bestowed the title of German "Winemaker of the Year" upon the estate, which has pioneered quality wine production in the southern Pfalz and is now regularly one of the top producers of dry Riesling in all of Germany. The family name--Rebholz--translates to "vine wood," and the government bestowed the title of honorary title of "Ökonomierat" (agricultural counselor) upon Eduard Rebholz (1889-1966), grandfather of Hansjörg Rebholz, the estate's current manager. Rebholz has long championed naturwein in Germany, and produces wines without chaptalization or the addition of süssreserve (unfermented grape juice). The estate is certified organic, and vineyards are farmed biodynamically. VDP member.
